LaurentidesOn Route 323 en route to Lac des Plages, Vendée is located near the Papineau-Labelle Wildlife Reserve and has some public access to Lakes Cameron and de la Sucrerie. One of its heritage buildings is a wooden church, which stands as a testimonial to its past. Rockway VALLEY (direction Huberdeau) is part of the municipality of Amherst. Located south of Saint Rémi, this town is a cluster of homesteads at the crossroads of the municipalities of Boileau and Huberdeau. The first settlers came via Chelsea, Grenville, and Morin-Heights, through Huberdeau to settle in the township. In April 1877, these peasants, from Londonderry, Ireland, crossed the Red River to settle in this southern canton. All these families were Anglophone and protestant. The first settlers were the Neil and Sinclair families. The most beautiful legacy of Rockway Valley is St. George Anglican Church built by pioneers Charles and John Sinclair, carpenters by trade. The description of the church appears in The Inventory of Places of Worship in Quebec where it is described as follows: "traditional Anglican of great quality, it is made of wood with a tin roof. It has a polygonal vault, a ship-styled nave and is adorned with stained glass." The name of Amherst Township refers to General Jeffrey Amherst, who conquered New France for England. Today, Amherst is characterized as a municipality for cottagers and vacationers from all over Quebec, Ontario and even the United States.
